Why We Started Pure Sweat Sauna: A Love of Löyly, Finnish Culture and Feeling Good

For us, sauna was never a product first. It was a habit, a ritual and a part of family life long before it became a business.

Why We Started Pure Sweat Sauna: A Love of Löyly, Finnish Culture and Feeling Good

Pure Sweat Sauna is a family business based in Rotorua, run by Anu and Trevor Weir. Between us we have over 47 years of saunaing experience. Anu is Finnish, and sauna is woven into where she comes from. Trevor came to it through Anu and never looked back. Today our own sauna and cold plunge are a must used corner of our home.

So when we went looking for a quality Finnish style sauna in New Zealand, we were surprised by how hard it was to find one that felt authentic and was still affordable. That gap is why Pure Sweat Sauna exists.

Sauna is a way of life in Finland

In Finland, sauna is not a luxury. There are around three million saunas for a population of about 5.5 million, which works out at roughly one for every two people. You find them in apartments, office buildings, summer cottages and even parliament.

In 2020, UNESCO added Finnish sauna culture to its list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. That recognition was about more than heat. It was about what sauna means to Finns: a place to slow down, clean the body, clear the mind and spend time together.

A few things sit at the heart of a true Finnish sauna:

  • Löyly. The soft wave of steam that rises when water is thrown on hot stones. Good löyly is the whole point, and it depends on the heater, the stones and the room.
  • Calm, not competition. Nobody is trying to see how long they can last. You sit, you sweat, you cool off, and you repeat.
  • Cooling down. A lake swim, a cold shower or a cold plunge between rounds is part of the ritual.
  • Connection. Sauna is for family, friends and conversation, or simply for quiet.

We wanted New Zealanders to experience sauna this way, in a properly designed room that delivers real löyly, not just a hot box.

What the research says about sauna and health

We are passionate about health, and it is a big part of why we do this. Anu has a background in personal training, and we both see sauna as one of the simplest, most enjoyable habits you can build into a healthy week.

Much of the best research comes from Finland, from a long running study of more than 2,300 middle aged men in eastern Finland followed over roughly 20 years. The researchers found:

  • Heart health. Men who used a sauna four to seven times a week had a lower risk of fatal cardiovascular disease and around a 40 percent lower risk of death from all causes, compared with men who used it once a week.
  • Brain health. In the same group, frequent sauna users had a lower risk of being diagnosed with dementia and Alzheimer's disease.
  • Blood pressure. Regular sauna bathing was also linked with a lower risk of developing high blood pressure.

These are observational studies, so they show a strong association rather than proof that sauna alone causes the benefit. Frequent sauna users may also have other healthy habits. Even so, the findings are consistent, and they match what many people feel after a session: relaxed muscles, better sleep and a calmer head.

If you have a heart condition, are pregnant or have any health concerns, check with your doctor before you start. And always stay well hydrated.

Why we do what we do

We started Pure Sweat Sauna to make authentic, good quality Finnish style saunas accessible to New Zealanders. That means:

  • Real Nordic timber. Our saunas are built from thermally modified Nordic timber, chosen for how it handles heat and moisture.
  • Proper heaters. We build our rooms around trusted Harvia heaters and their safety requirements, because the heater is what makes the löyly.
  • Honest support. We are a small family business. When you call, you talk to us.

Most of all, we want to share something that has given our family so much. Sauna is where we unwind after a long day, recover after training and catch up with each other without screens.

If you have been thinking about bringing sauna into your own life, we would love to help. Have a look at our range, or get in touch and we can talk through what would suit your space.

Nähdään saunassa. See you in the sauna.
