Rediscovering Sauna in Finland | Pure Sweat NZ
Our trip back to Finland, where we experienced 20 different saunas, reinforced what truly matters — not the specifications, but the deep relaxation and connection made with loved ones.
Coming Home: Rediscovering Sauna in the Land Where It All Began
As a Finn, you'd think I'd be immune to the magic of sauna - that familiarity would have dulled its impact. But our recent trip back to Finland proved me wonderfully wrong.
My husband and I had the privilege of experiencing around 20 different saunas during our visit, and even for us - people deeply familiar with Finnish sauna culture - it was a powerful reminder of what sauna is truly meant to be.
Twenty Saunas, One Truth
From my sister's outdoor sauna to Finland's best ice swimming and sauna spot, from modern apartment building saunas to the humble sauna at my mum's house - every single one was different. Different sizes, different settings, different woods, different stoves.
Yet the end result was always the same: more relaxed, calmer humans emerging from those sacred spaces.
What Really Matters (And What Doesn't)
Being back in Finland reinforced something I've always known but sometimes need reminding of: Finns simply aren't bothered about which type of wood is used in the sauna. There's no debate about whether spruce is superior to pine, no endless discussions about specifications.
What matters is the time spent with loved ones. The new connections made while sitting side by side on those wooden benches. The deep relaxation that settles into your bones after a long day - or a long winter.
Sauna as a Way of Life
In Finland, sauna isn't a luxury or a wellness trend - it's woven into the very fabric of life. It's part of every celebration, from weddings to midsummer to Christmas Eve. It's built into the weekly rhythm like Saturday morning coffee or Sunday walks.
Sauna offers the perfect way to slow down and just be. No agenda, no performance, no rushing.
The Gift of Simplicity
What struck us most - even though we know this culture intimately - was the beautiful simplicity of it all. There's no loud music drowning out conversation. No theatrical towel whisking or Instagram-worthy performances.
Just blissful relaxation. Quiet chatting about everything and nothing - work worries, family news, childhood memories, dreams for the future. Sometimes comfortable silence. Always genuine presence.
This is what we grew up with. This is what we want to share.
Bringing Finland to New Zealand
Living in New Zealand, we've built Pure Sweat Sauna NZ on these very principles. We're not just selling saunas - we're sharing a way of life that has sustained and nourished Finns for thousands of years.
Our recent trip home reminded us why this matters so much. In a world that's increasingly loud, busy, and disconnected, sauna offers something precious: a space to reconnect with yourself and the people you love. A ritual of restoration. A sanctuary of simplicity.
The Finns have been doing this right for millennia. We're honored to bring that wisdom - our heritage - to New Zealand homes, one sauna at a time.
