Saunas transcend mere steam-filled chambers; they embody sanctuaries of tranquility and revitalization. Much like any sanctuary, they carry unspoken guidelines and etiquette. Whether you're a seasoned sauna enthusiast or a newcomer eager to delve into the sauna world, let's explore the nuances of sauna etiquette, ensuring your sauna encounters are both blissful and harmonious.
Honor the Quiet
Upon entering the sauna, a noticeable serenity fills the air. Embrace this silence and cultivate an atmosphere conducive to everyone's relaxation. Refrain from loud conversations, excessive noise, or disruptive behaviour. Instead, allow the gentle sounds of breathing and the sauna stove's crackling to compose a soothing symphony.
Wrap It Up
Understanding and respecting local customs and rules regarding sauna nudity is crucial. Some saunas embrace nudity, while others expect patrons to wear towels or swimsuits. Take a moment to observe and follow the lead of others. If uncertain, feel free to inquire with staff or regular sauna-goers about the preferred dress code.
Maintain Cleanliness
Saunas represent spaces of purity, demanding impeccable hygiene. Before entering, indulge in a brief shower to cleanse your body of lotions, oils, or sweat, ensuring a pleasant and odor-free environment. Utilize a towel or sit on your own to preserve the cleanliness of sauna benches.
Respect Personal Boundaries
Especially during peak hours, saunas may become crowded. Be mindful of personal space, refraining from crowding or sitting too close to others unless necessary. If the sauna is full, exercise patience and wait for a spot to open up. Respecting boundaries is essential for a harmonious sauna experience.
Cautiously Embrace the Heat
While saunas embrace heat, being mindful of your limits is crucial. Beginners or those sensitive to high temperatures should start with lower benches. Allow your body to acclimate gradually and heed its signals. If discomfort, dizziness, or lightheadedness arises, step outside and cool down.
Löyly: The Art of Steam
Throwing water on sauna stones, or löyly, enhances the sauna experience by creating steam. If you wish to try it, do so in moderation. A small amount of water suffices to generate steam without making the sauna uncomfortably humid for others.
Time Awareness
Sauna sessions may vary in length, but it's vital to be mindful of others waiting to use the facility. In busy saunas, limit your session duration to allow others their turn. Adhere to posted time limits or guidelines provided by the sauna facility.
Hydration is Key
Sweating in the sauna depletes fluids, making hydration crucial. Bring a water bottle and take sips between sauna rounds to replenish your body. However, avoid alcohol or heavy meals before or during sauna sessions, as they can be dehydrating or discomfort-inducing.
Embrace Post-Sauna Rituals
After your sauna session, cool down and relax. Enjoy a refreshing shower to cleanse your skin and invigorate your senses with cool water. If additional amenities like a cold plunge pool or outdoor area are available, indulge in a dip to enhance your post-sauna experience.
Share the Sauna Spirit
Sauna etiquette extends beyond personal conduct; it fosters a sense of community. Smile, nod, or greet fellow sauna-goers with a friendly "hello," embracing the sauna culture together. Engage in light conversations, exchange sauna tips, or simply revel in the serene ambiance as stress melts away.
To my fellow sauna enthusiasts, let's sauna with grace, respect, and mindfulness. By adhering to sauna etiquette, we can cultivate an atmosphere of tranquility and camaraderie, making each sauna experience truly delightful. Sweat on and savour the blissful embrace of the sauna sanctuary!

Here's what's strange about our modern reality: we're more "connected" than ever and more isolated than we've been in generations. We have thousands of online friends but struggle to sit down for a meal with our actual family. We can video call across continents but can't find an hour to be together in the same room. We have housands of online friends but struggle to sit into family time. Even dinner—that traditional cornerstone of family life—has become another place we desperately need, where interaction can happen organically.
Our boys don't join us every time we fire up the sauna—and that's okay. They're teenagers with their own lives, their own schedules. But when they do, something shifts. We sauna has become that rare space in our week where conversation flows naturally, without pressure, but with intention. It's not forced. It's just what happens when you're sitting half-naked in the heat, creating spaces and opportunities where connection can happen naturally.
